Hexapod Robot CNC router

Hey Matt,

Nice work, man! I found your robot via boingboing and it's a great inspiration. It was especially cool to see your blog and see not only the current capabilities, but all of the work it took you to get here. I haven't researched yet, but that 6 legged robot is a kit of some sort?

I really love the idea of a walking router and it seems like it's not too far of a stretch from where you are now. I say go for it! All you have to know is position and orientation, right? I imagine version 4 of this thing pooping out little beacons before it starts its programmed labor of sculpting out beautiful frescoes and replicas of Michaelangelo's more tasteful works.

Do you plan to check if this robot could cut a soft plastic while walking with appropriate accuracy?
This could be a wonderful alternative for expensive table CNC routers.

After being pestered by a you tube member who became obsessed by the missing 8 minutes during the first detail pass in the original CNC hexapod footage, I have just uploaded a new cut, with just the first pass footage, and a soundtrack to save the ears! It also has the new hi res view option





I haven't found a way of forcing the hi res version in this embedded player.. to see hi res you will need to click through to youtube and select the hi-res option bottom right of video.

I have just uploaded the 3D face video.

Cutting 3D face


To cut the face I did three passes:
1) roughing cut
2) X raster finish
3) Y raster finish.


The face took just under 30 minutes to produce.
